From piss art to pop noise, VanGaalen has always been a compelling performer
One of the most interesting things about a Chad VanGaalen live show is the stark differences his performance takes. And Saturday’s show at Amigos was similarly a complete mindfuck. While he’s since played in various theatres in Saskatoon, introducing a softer material to a sit-down-and-quietly-listen type of crowd, his new material is more conducive to weird bursts of soft noise and clatter. Not to say he’s abandoned his folk persona completely, but VanGaalen has always been a playful sort of musician whose pop sensibilities seem to be guided by his own sense of amusement.
Which is probably the only thing that could explain that weird-ass little guitar he was playing.
