EP release show to take place on Friday, August 8 at Vangelis
Since releasing their previous three-song EP Not Worth the Waiting late last year, Saskatoon hardcore band Castaway has kept themselves busy writing new material. And now the four-piece group are about to launch those songs on their latest EP, Space to Run, in advance of their upcoming cross-Canada tour with Edmonton’s Ringleader.
The EP comes after the band’s recent line-up shift, which saw them gaining two new members last fall. It’s also resulted in a progression from the old material, says bassist Patrick Eaton.
On Space to Run, the band takes sludged-out guitar riffs and stack them up amidst pummelling rhythms and hoarse vocals. While the majority of the songs never stray far from the mid-tempo mark there’s a good sense of energy and earnestness throughout. This is especially evidenced on the EP’s closing song “Tatler North”, which begins with a clean guitar tone and vocals that eventually explodes into layers of fuzz and howls. Aggressive without being menacing, on Space to Run Castaway manage to write upbeat punk rock anthems that are raw without sacrificing the melody.
Recorded with Craig Boychuk – who has worked with a diverse range of artists including Propagandhi, KEN Mode and Pop Crimes – at Private Ear studios in Winnipeg, Eaton says the end results are among Castaway’s most realized recordings to date.
“Craig had recorded a lot of great records and we were excited for his take on ours. Although it was primarily recorded live, Craig’s work ethic and attention to detail was instrumental in how the EP turned out. After some finishing touches at Audiosiege mastering in Seattle, we couldn’t be happier on the finished product.”
