Lucky to release The Ballad of Losing You September 13 at the Bassment
Zachary Lucky, a country folk singer/songwriter from Saskatoon, will be unveiling his latest full-length album The Ballad of Losing You this Friday, September 13 at The Bassment. Opening the show is The Karpinka Brothers and Little Criminals.
This is Lucky’s first album on Ontario’s Missed Connection Records, a fledgling label based out of Guelph.
While his songs are still very much in the same vein as his previous work – The Ballad of Losing You is filled with prairies folk songs that resonate with romance – it seems as though Lucky is in good company with Missed Connection Records.
With connections to Guelph’s Bry Webb and the Providers, label founders Tyler Belluz and Mike Brooks are positioning themselves to push Lucky even further. With years of experience behind them, the duo were finally ready to release music under their own imprint.
Ominocity recently caught up with Belluz for a quick chat on starting a new record label and the heartrending songs of Zach Lucky.
Ominocity: Missed Connection Records very much seems like a labour of love – what was the impetus for starting the label?
Tyler Belluz: This label is essentially an extension of what myself and Mike Brooks have been doing for years. Collectively we have been performing, engineering and producing countless albums with many groups on all types of labels. Our inclination to start a label began a while ago, however we have always been waiting for someone else to step in and do the work for us. Once Mike and I realized we were doing the grunt work already, we thought we might as well put a name under our own little movement.
OM: Being situated in Guelph, what drew you to work with Saskatchewan musician Zach Lucky? Is there a connection to be drawn between where he comes from and what he does and your own scene?
TB: Although our connection to Zach is quite strong today, it definitely came about loosely. Mike Brooks and I were touring out west with Bry Webb when Zach (I think) set up a tour with us. Lucky truly got to know Mike and I well, the night we shared a bottle of his whiskey, our first night off on tour. We ended up doing a handful of dates with Zach and Snailhouse (now Michael Feuerstack) and got to really sit and take in Zachary’s work. Time passed since our initial meeting, and a few tours later, we decided that we had the experience and connections to further expand his glowing career.
OM: Any upcoming releases that you can share with us?
TB: Zachary’s tour starts in a few days with his latest record The Ballad Of Losing You, but past that Alanna Gurr will be in the studio Tapes and Plates next week for a Spring release, and Legato Vipers will be launching our first LP sometime in the Spring as well.
