We Were Lovers Interview

We Were Lovers, a Saskatoon-based dance pop group, are currently in the midst of a cross-Canada tour in support of their latest single “We’ve Got It”, which also was recently leaked as a remix via Ricky Rock.

Although the band has weathered several different line-ups, the core of the group – Elsa Gebremichael and Ashley Lamothe – has remained intact. And with their other releases now behind them, including The Breakup and their latest self-titled EP, the duo are focusing on their most dynamic sound yet.

“‘We’ve Got It’ was actually written almost a year ago and started out sounding a lot different,” says Gebremichael. “At the time we were listening to a lot of club music and this song’s sound really reflected that. We performed it live a few times but it just never felt quite right to us. So we decided to put it on hold for a while. Months later we decided to revisit it. Sometimes taking a break helps you to look at it with a different perspective, which usually has a positive result and is the case with this song.

“We switched up the beat, added a fresh synth line that gave the song a new hook, added some guitar and revamped the arrangement,” she continues. “We instantly fell in love with the new changes and couldn’t wait to demo it. It’s now one of our favourite songs to play live and is the first offering off our upcoming full length. We’ll also be posting a remix version by Ricky Rock in the near future.”

Like that cute bartender who sometimes winks at me while shaking martinis, We Were Lovers sass and shimmy their way through startling loud beats, soulful yelps and slinky guitar lines. And by utilizing the ultimate tool in dance music – the remix – We Were Lovers seamlessly mash-up indie pop dance cool with post-prairies beats-driven dissonance and a badass pair of cheap sunglasses.

And with the addition of a live drummer, Gebremichael states that the group’s live performance has gotten fuller.

“We take pride in our show and it’s the energy and connection we have with each other as well as the audience that is truly so invigorating and just an overall amazing feeling,” says Gebremichael. “This tour we’ve added another element – drummer Brad Heck, who’s great! We’ve toured as a duo and as a five-piece before but never as a trio, and we’re very happy to have him on board to help us present another version of our show throughout North America. Expect high energy, sweaty, dance party vibes all the way.”

Although “We’ve Got It” is pretty much only a teaser of what is to come, We Were Lovers promise a new wave of songs out next year.

“The new album will be out in the spring of 2012,” says Gebremichael. “We’ll have another couple tracks of it available between now and then in anticipation of its release.”
