Jody Cason, local musician and co-conspirator in folk-rock band The Browntones, is vying for votes in the Rupali Project – an entry in a contest that aims to collect unwanted sewing machines from Canada and deliver them to women in India.
“Here in Canada, very few women sew their own clothes any more,” says Cason. “The global economy and outsourcing has almost made the practice obsolete. All over the country, machines that once hummed in happy industry are silent. By sending them to India, not only do we recycle unwanted machinery, we create industry and prosperity for third world women”.
