MoSo: The Burning Hell, Minor Matter and respectfulchild at The Refinery
June 17, 2016 @ 7:00 pm
MoSoFest and MoSo Conference are very proud to welcome The Burning Hell back to Western Canada after a five year absence. We are also incredibly excited to have Minor Matter celebrating the release of their new album, Barren Ground, at this show. Opening the night is respectfulchild.
The Burning Hell is the alter-ego of Canadian songwriter Mathias Kom. Having been on the road since since 2007 the band has played everywhere from festivals like Glastonbury and Dawson City to bars, living rooms, abandoned bunkers, and a mental asylum in rural France. They run the gamut from introspective folk to hyperactive rock and taking the audience on a supermarket-cart ride through hooky, upbeat pop songs, dark ballads about pet euthanasia, and anthems for barbarians, economic conferences, and love. Set to release Public Library, a new album of distorted story-songs, in April 2016, and they’ll spend the better part of the spring and summer in their natural habitat: the tour van.
When it comes to musical experiences, Minor Matter prefers to take the listener down the path less travelled. With influences as diverse as the instruments they bring along for the ride, this orchestral folk quintet charts a course brimming with scenic detours and unsuspecting surprises.
Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Minor Matter started as Jeffrey Popiel’s experimental solo project and has grown to include 5 multi-instrumentalists that help bring his carefully crafted originals to life. Drawing on a well-stocked musical tool-box that includes everything from the bassoon and clarinet to glockenspiel and ukulele, Stephanie Unverricht, Heather Lake, Skyler Cafferata and Jon Henderson work to seamlessly fuse classical, folk, country, jazz and psychedelic rock.
It’s amazing what can be done with a loop pedal. Melissa Gan’s work as respectfulchild is built on violin loops that are as hallucinatory as they are heavenly. While recent output is mostly sketches and demos, Gan’s live performance is fully fleshed out and ready to capture your heart.
All ages are welcome at this show.
