Cher Brings Vegas Calibre Performance to Saskatoon: Concert Review

Pop legends Cher and Cyndi Lauper dazzle Saskatoon audience

While much of Saturday’s Pride festivities were rained out, the evening had a special concert in store that could only be described as fabulous.

Cher and Cyndi Lauper performed on June 21, 2014 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon to a full house ready to be dazzled. Not only did the concert coincide with the Saskatoon Pride Festival, but the date also marked singer Cyndi Lauper’s 61st birthday. Lauper delivered her hits with spirit and sass as the crowd sang Happy Birthday to the iconic performer.

I laughed as friends discussed what they were wearing to Cher the night before the show, but the audience was no stranger to sparkle and sequins. Even more impressive than the several Cher impersonators spotted in the crowd was the woman in front row who committed to changing her outfit each time that Cher changed on stage. Rumour has it that she arrived wearing three layered outfits with more in a bag ready to be worn throughout the night.

Cher’s performance was spectacular. The 68-year-old icon flawlessly belted out hit after hit as the stage constantly transformed along with her outfits. Interludes featuring performance dance, acrobatics and videos of Cher’s life and body of work separated her songs and brought charm and character to the Vegas quality show.

A personal highlight was Cher singing a touching duet with black-and-white footage of her late husband Sonny Bono. There was definitely a few tears in the audience that night.

The evening was quite the spectacle that wowed the biggest of fans and surely won over any reluctant companions.

But if I could make a suggestion for future performances, a Cher/Lauper duet would have totally rocked. “If I Could Turn Back Time”/”Time After Time” mashup anyone?
