Zachary Lucky album release show review
Saskatoon’s Zachary Lucky has released his latest album, entitled Saskatchewan.
The album is soft-spoken and plaintive, with added instrumentation that is oft-missing from his live show. But among Lucky’s musical gifts is his ability to sound timeless and classic – at the age of 23 he still has decades ahead to perfect his craft despite sounding like he is already hitting a respectable stride.
The release show for Saskatchewan was located at the Christ Church in Saskatoon, which is the perfect venue for Lucky’s stripped-down country folk songs. Quiet and reverent, with magnificent arching ceilings, intimate
Carly Maicher opened the show, playing songs from her album Hiding. Next up was members of Slow Down Molasses, who played a handful of songs including several covers.
Joined by a banjo player as well as Maicher, the man of the evening played a brief-albeit-memorable set that included several songs from his new disc as well as a song written by his grandmother – also a folk singer. The highlight of the evening, however, came when Lucky came out for his encore and moved away from the mic, letting the audience hear his naked voice – an appropriate ending to an intimate sojourn into a collection of provincial anthems.
