To start off this year’s series we’ve decided to invite some of the neighbours over. Joining us for this seasons inaugural evening will be:
joel mierau is a Winnipeg based artist working in sound performance, improvisation and composition.
Performing as an improvising non-musician within the trio Existers, he explores forms of discrete movement within methods of repetition/restraint & duration. His solo performances are often focused, structured compositions while still retaining an instinctual flair of subtle, restrained improvisation.
Burden is Caitlin Hutchison & Doreen Girard. Formed in Winnipeg, MB in 2011, their collaboration emerged out of working together at Negative Space, a collectively-run venue and art space.
Burden creates composed and improvised works for the amplified piano soundboard, exploring physical properties of the piano: tension, tuning, and resonance, improvising with handmade tools and found objects to produce dark warm drones, thuds, and squeals. Unlike a full piano, whose felt dampers mute the strings until a note is played, the open soundboard’s strings all vibrate and sound at once, creating layers of beating harmonics.
