In support of their debut album, Martel (out February 11, 2014), Jay Malinowski & The Deadcoast will set sail on their Meet Me At The Gate national tour.
“I’m really looking forward to bringing Martel alive onstage, enlisting the help of Krief (The Dears) and Vancouver three-piece string trio The End Tree into our onstage crew,” describes Jay Malinowski. “This show is going to be a departure from the past. It’s moody, ominous, destructive and beautiful all at the same time. Martel is a sailor, a man confronting his world. The audience participating in the story is integral, and we all can’t wait to start that journey. Come down friends, meet us at the gate.”
From the unfiltered inner monologue of Calgary’s Matt Swann, Astral Swans is the sound of time spent next to the radiator in a cold apartment. Swann’s observations are stark and personal. His sonics are equally reminiscent of 60’s folk, no wave and 90’s sludge, and bring to mind images of the American underground’s various eras. We hear hints of Nick Drake, Syd Barret and Vashti Bunyan interpreted via Guided By Voices, Sonic Youth or Chad Vangaalen (who produced Swann’s previous project Extra Happy Ghost). He lacks the usual pretence of the “singer/songwriter” and one gets the feeling his cleverness is almost accidental; it’s just what came to mind. Debut LP “All My Favourite Singers Are Willie Nelson” is expected 2014 on Madic Records.
