Local musicians to cover songs from Big Shiny Tunes 2
If you remember things like manic panic hair dye, wallet chains, grunge, Doc Martens and pre-rerun Seinfeld then you probably remember MuchMusic and their endless stream of compilation CDs including the Big Shiny Tunes series.
Oh the ‘90s.
On the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 27, Saskatoon’s Broadway Theatre will be hosting Big Shiny Tunes 2 in Concert.
The show features a literal menagerie of local performers, including 911 Turbo, Jeans Boots, The Classy Chassys, Carrie Catherine, actors Paige Goodman and Ed Mendez and Isaac Bond of Saskatoon’s 2012 Slam Poetry Team.
Even better, attendees are encouraged to dress ‘90s style. Time to dig out the army shorts cut-offs and a pair of longjohns!
In addition to getting to relive a time when people thought it was socially acceptable to wear a Cat in the Hat beanie in public, host and organizer Heather Morrison says that the event also doubles as a fundraiser for the Broadway Theatre.
“This event is during our fundraising week so every dollar made during that week, up to $ 20,000, is matched by Potash Corp. So technically, every beer you buy is a solid donation to arts and culture,” says Morrison.
“We wanted to raise awareness with a younger crowd of the cool stuff that goes on at the Broadway Theatre,” she continues. “By putting on a concert that will target everyone who grew up in the 90’s, we increase the membership of people in their early 20’s to early 30’s. Hopefully we’ll see them out at our other events.”
If they really wanted to do something cool then they probably should have covered the MuchMusic X-Tendamix Dance Mix CD series, but that’s probably just me.
The event is free for members of the Broadway Theatre or you can get a ticket with the purchase of a membership for $20.
