Regina instrumental band drops collaboration with Belle Plaine
The Lazy MKs report that they are releasing a series of singles as part of their Sunset Sessions. The first of these digital only downloads is “Brawlers”, which features vocals by Regina folk songstress Belle Plaine.
“The MKs brought Belle Plaine with them to play a show in a small town in Saskatchewan,” says steel player Etienne Soulodre. “After the show, the band got in a barfight with some locals. Belle Plaine wrote a song about the night and we figured we had to record it with her.”
Despite its bruise-y subject matter, the song is fairly subdued, featuring plenty of slow-plodding instrumentation such as lap steel and piano. The vocal however are both sad and sublime, offering a strangely sweet to contrast to the crudiness that usually encapsulates a typical small town brawl.
Soulodre says that future installments in the Sunset series will include some new original tunes, an instrumental version of “Sabotage” and collaborations with Andy Shauf and Carl Johnson of Library Voices.
