Winterruption 2017: Vande Vasudevam at The Broadway Theatre
January 21, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Vande Vasudevam is a Thematic Production in Kuchipudi, one of the major Indian classical dances, presented by SSDM Ensemble, Edmonton, Alberta, and performed by 12 artists. The two hour dance-drama production takes the audience through the life and exploits of Krishna.
This thematic presentation on Krishna describes the baby Krishna with indulgent love and joy, and the audience is treated to the scene of the baby Krishna playing with Yashoda and the Gopis. Following a joyous dance, the mood shifts to wonder, with Yashoda praising her son. Followed by Gopis praising Krishna’s prowess in lifting the Govardhana Mountain in an elaborate krithi composed by Sri Narayana Theerda. Govardhana Giri Dhara is a presentation of different episodes in the life of Krishna as described by the Gopis, they describe the attributes of the adult Krishna, the enchanter of the Gopis, portrays the handsome Krishna dancing the Raas with the Gopis in Brindavan – a fast-paced masterpiece performed on the rim of a brass plate in a scintilating choreography by Dr.Vempati Chinna satyam.
The swiftness and exuberance of this piece is beautifully offset by the next, Gayathi Vanamali, depicting the soulful yearning of Gopis for Krishna. This interlude of Bhakti is followed by a playful exchange between Krishna and Radha, Followed by few very traditional Kuchipudi prevesa Daruvus (character Introductions) from the Yaksha Ganas presented by Dr. Vedantam Venkat. The production ends with the Thillana, a high energy Nritta piece (pure Dance).
Presented by the India-Canada Cultural Association and the Broadway Theatre
