A solo project for Torontonian Simone Schmidt, Fiver has been referred to as one of Canada’s most prolific lyrists and vocalists. Known for fronting bands such as The Higest Order and One Hundred Dollars, Schmidt has taken her hauntingly captivating vocals to a whole new level. Using instrumentations to add subtly emotive nuances to each song, Fiver stuns audiences in to dreamy trances and nostalgic silences.
Fisticuffs is a indie-rock band from Saskatoon based around the songs of Jordan Kurtz (former member of We Were Lovers, Treelines, Zachary Lucky). Over the years they’ve shared the stage with Said The Whale, Aidan Knight, Jordan Klassen, Northcote, We Are The City, Wide Mouth Mason, Andy Shauf, and more. With a new lineup and a highly anticipated full length record set to be released in 2014, they’ve developed an energetic live show exploring the space between dream pop and alt-country. Confirmed for 2014’s (soon to be) sold out OmFest at Amigos, this year has the band gearing up for some touring, a major album release, and hopefully a festival or two.
What started as a solo project for Chris Sleightholm, guitarist and vocalist of The Lonesome Weekends, Snake River is now a five-piece, injecting reverb and hazy guitar riffs into traditional folk sounds. The band’s second full length LP, called McKruski, is a collection of dense songs about the fictional town of Snake River Mountain and the characters that inhabit the town (set to drop early 2014).
Perhaps having to tough through a Yukon winter is a driving force behind the unassuming folksy sounds created by singer/songwriter Jona Barr. No matter spars the creative process along, the result is timeless and unassuming songs. Joined by a number of musical friends, the recently released and self-titled LP varies tempos and tones while staying true to soulful lyrics and gut-wrenching themes that will steal your heart.
Zachary Lucky can sing a story like none other. Starting his musical career playing around with soft tunes tied together with gut wrenching lyrics, Lucky’s most recent album, The Ballad of Losing You, sees Lucky toying with the relationship between country and folk. When you listen to Lucky’s raw, husky voice carry delicate melodies you can’t help but close your eyes and day dream about being in the woods with a beautiful gal on your arm.
