About DRAGON FLI EMPIRE
It was a song in 2002 about a bus route that brought Calgary hip hop duo Dragon Fli Empire out of the basement and into the limelight. Now a decade post-“Mount Pleasant”, they have become a leading force in the city’s hip hop scene, from opening for names like De La Soul, The Roots, Public Enemy and Mos Def to performing at festivals like the Calgary Folk Fest, Sled Island, Warped Tour, Shambhala and Rock the Bells.
They were nominated for Best Hip Hop Album at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards and have toured through Canada, the United States, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway and Switzerland. The DFE have released music independently as well as through labels in Canada, Japan and Finland. The crew is always staying busy, with numerous group & solo projects, primarily released on their own independent label Makebelieve Records.
Cquel released his most recent ep ‘Never Enough’ February 26th, 2016. It contains production from WCMA award winning producer Factor Chandelier (Def3 – Wildlif3) amongst others. ‘Never Enough is his 4th commercial release since 2013, among those is an ep released in late 2014 entitled ‘Meal Ticket’ that was produced in it’s entirety by Juno Award credited producer Relic aka Rel McCoy (Shad, Ghetto Concept). Both of these albums charted in the national top 10 hip-hop charts numerous times on Canadian college radio.
Cquel has done over 300 shows in the last 4 years across Canada and the United States. He has toured consistently as a headlining act and as main tour support for artists such as Project Blowedian Abstract Rude, Scarub of Living Legends, Evil Ebenezer, Rel McCoy, Ghettosocks, and more. He has shared stages across North America with artists like Open Mike Eagle, R.A.The Rugged Man, Apathy & Celph Titled, Kirby Dominant, SonReal, Merkules, Snak The Ripper and many more. He has also played music festivals like Canadian Music Week in Toronto, MosoFest in Saskatoon, The Parks Festival in Kelowna, and Electric Love in Chilliwack.
Cquel’s fan base has grown tremendously over the past few years and he has received funding from Creative Saskatchewan, Saskmusic, and The Saskatchewan Arts Board. Cquel is well on his way to captivating a much larger fan base and solidifying himself as an artist to be taken seriously in Canada and across the world.
