Dilla Day Saskatoon is one of several worldwide memorials held on/around Dilla’s birthday (February 7th) to commemorate the life and legacy of producer/rapper/musician J Dilla.
With Super Duty Tough Work acting as an 8-piece live MPC, Dilla Day Saskatoon sees one of Canada’s premier live hip hop outfits performing Dilla classics, renditions and interpretations, with guest appearances from some of the top MCs and vocalists from Saskatoon.
Born in Detroit to an opera-singer mother and a jazz-musician father, James “Dilla” Yancey grew to become one of hip hop’s most far-reaching influencers. Working with the likes of Slum Village, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and many others, he gave us his unique sound and feel, influencing not only the beatmakers of hip hop, but also musicians from all genres.
In 2006, as the result of a blood disorder, JD passed. His legacy however, has lived-on through his music, countless unreleased projects and collaborations, a colossal record collection, the J Dilla Foundation (which focuses on funding lupus research) and the family-owned Yancey Media Group.
Every year on Dilla’s birthday, people gather in various locations around the globe to remember and celebrate his love and work.
Join us February 3rd to celebrate the life, love and music of the incomparable J Dilla!!
Since forming in late 2014, SUPER DUTY TOUGH WORK has quickly established itself as the region’s premier live hip hop contingent. Fronted by Brendan Grey (aka Giant #3 of Sleeping Giants) and backed by some highly skilled local and international musicians, SDTW is an eight-piece (give or take) powerhouse. The group sees itself rooted in the traditions of hip hop’s golden era, yet always fresh, remaining informed by today’s sounds. Grey’s lyrics are that of a well-schooled writer. His witty, informed, rhythmic “get loose style” sees him comfortable either rocking the party or dropping jewels, perfectly balancing out the oral portion of the group. Heavily influenced by the jazz-inspired vibe of early ‘90s east coast hip-hop, SDTW mixes live instrumentation with samples and an array of vocal styles to give a high-energy, satisfaction-guaranteed performance for hip hop heads and music lovers alike.
