The music of Andino Suns may have been forged in the fire of Chilean revolt –which it undoubtedly is- but it is also rooted heavily in the fabric of the vast Canadian prairies.
Their new album “Madera” combines the sizzling sounds of South American sun with the earthiness of prairie solitude. It’s laced with elements of traditional Andean music; (those with a keen ear for sound will notice charango, quena and Toyos) yet it also contains the charm and sensibilities of art, which, although far from its origins, feels more than comfortable in its surroundings.
Oral Fuentes’ musical experience started in his home country of Belize, where he was involved with a multicultural band, ‘Caribbean Jam’, playing for many local and countrywide events. Since then Oral has traveled extensively to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Surinam, Guyana, USA, and the Caribbean. Commencing his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Cambridge, Ontario in 1989, Oral traveled and wrote songs with ‘The Warriors’ rock band and ‘Soul’d Out’ a soul/blues band, both from the Academy. Their route took them many times to New York and Nashville.
Oral moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1992. Since then, Oral continues to play with musicians from Saskatoon, showcasing from the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, to many other festivals and cultural events.
Oral’s Caribbean and Latin rhythms include the musical styles of Reggae, Soca, Punta-Rock and Brukdown (both music from Belize). Oral writes and performs his own songs.
Playing numerous venues and festivals in Saskatchewan and Alberta (including the Saskatchewan International Jazz Festival, The Jasper Folk Music Festival, The Ness Creek Music Festival, The Blue Chair in Edmonton, The Artful Dodger in Regina and Saskatoon’s Jazz Bassment), along with radio play on CBC, CKUA, CFBX and CFCR, The Whiskey Jerks’ sound is rife with originality, sweet vocal blends, and a distinct whiskey-soaked sensibility.
The Whiskey Jerks came together when Gillian Snider, who no longer wanted to drink alone, felt it was time to expand upon her one woman accordiana show. After convincing the talented Anna Bekolay (violin), James Diakuw (clarinet), Nevin Buehler (upright bass), Peter Abonyi
(guitar) and Kevin Buzinski (percussion) to join her on her misadventure, The Whiskey Jerks soon began to create their own distinct niche, blending klezmer, country-blues, gypsy-punk, rock and jazz with clever lyrics, stories, and an honest prairie sound. The Whiskey Jerks will always keep you guessing…and dancing!
COME EARLY! $6 Black Bridge Lager Pints and $4 hi-balls/$6 doubles between 9:30pm – 11pm.
